STUDENT PLACEMENTS
LHTC offers placements to: student social workers (Lancaster University and the University of Central Lancashire); student counsellors (University of Cumbria); Medical Students (University of Lancaster).
Other student placements (e.g. Psychotherapist) may be available. Please contact the Student Unit Coordinator (Annie Huntington) for further information or an informal discussion.
Students receive appropriate support and supervision to ensure they understand the responsibilities associated with being a member of the community. Overall, students are valued members of the community who offer support to residents (in many different ways) whilst working alongside staff to deliver the treatment programme at Littledale Hall.
Student feedback has been consistently positive (see example below:)
Reflections on my placement at LHTC
I've never been to a rehabilitation unit before and so I had preconceived
ideas about what Littledale would be like. I thought it would be very
sterile and clinical where people would be treated in a hospital-like
environment. But it wasn't like that at all. As soon as I walked through
the doors I realised I had got it completely wrong. We were bombarded
with offers of cups of tea and coffee, what we'd like for lunch,
introductions (so many names and friendly faces), I could feel the warmth
immediately. It was a warm, friendly environment where I found treatment
to be holistic, based around a functioning community, social interactions,
treatment elements and certainly, and refreshingly, not around medical
interventions.
Before I came to Littledale I saw that as doctors you can treat the effect
that alcohol has on the body and you can physically make someone feel
better. But now I understand that this doesn't treat the reason why
people drink. The lesson that I'll take with me is that to simply treat
the physical manifestations of the problem isn't necessarily treating the
person. To treat the person, we have to address the underlying reasons
that make people dependent on alcohol.
